A sturdy frame with geometry similar to a mountain bike, but shaped for a more upright riding position than an MTB - the hands are less loaded and visibility stays better. Designed for longer journeys and often set up to fit various accessories such as mudguards and racks.
The material is aluminium, the most widespread choice. It is lighter than steel and stronger than carbon fibre, and is used in the manufacture of many types of bicycles. It offers the best price-to-weight ratio.
Plastic mudguards are often fitted to keep the overall weight of the bike to a minimum and to allow an additional rack to be mounted for carrying items.
